International Students Who are Allowed to Returned to China – A Timeline

Two years after the border was closed to foreign students, thousands of international students from more than 10 countries have recently been allowed to return to Chinese universities with the loosening of anti-epidemic policies. Sri Lanka students and Pakistani students, as well as students from other countries, have started to return to China. June 20, 2022: Pakistani Students

A special chartered flight has delivered the first batch of 105 Pakistani students to Xi'an on June 20, 2022, where they will undergo quarantine before returning to Chinese universities in different cities(PIA special flight carrying the first batch of Pakistani students arrives in Xian).

June 22, 2022: Thai Students

A flight of 140 Thai students traveled to China on a chartered flight. This is the second batch of Thai students returning–the first batch was a flight of 76 in February.

June 24, 2022: Sri Lankan Students

164 Sri Lankan medical students who had been stranded abroad due to the novel coronavirus pandemic since the beginning of 2020 arrived at Tianjin on a special chartered flight of Sri Lanka Airlines.

July 26, 2022: Indonesian Students May Return to China Soon

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Indonesian President Joko Widodo announced that “China and Indonesia will accelerate the resumption of people-to-people exchanges, including the return of Indonesian students to China; open more direct flights; and beef up cooperation in such fields as education(Joint Press Statement on the Bilateral Meeting between President of the People's Republic of China and President of the Republic of Indonesia).”

Special Focus

1. The official notification from the school means the final confirmation that you can go back to China. Generally, you need feedback on your intention or sign a document.

2. Up to now, the policy requires international students to pay for their isolation. The current isolation time is "7 days of centralized isolation medical observation + 3 days of home health monitoring", and the isolation time has been shortened by half compared with the previous “14+7”. The cost of isolation: room and board are around $120 per day, which may vary in different cities.
