What are the most popular universities in China in 2021? Any suggestions on how to choose a university?

I’m a student from Malaysia but I’m considering going to China for undergraduate study 2021. I am a huge fan of Li Ziqi and have watched every video she posted on the YouTube channel several times. The life in China and the Chinese culture she presented in her vlog really trigger my interest in this country. I am eager to have more exposure to Chinese culture and more exchanges with the Chinese. Therefore, I want to apply to a university in China. What are the most popular universities in China for international students? Does anyone list a top 10? Any suggestions?

I’m an international student in China and I think I can offer some useful suggestions. Back to the time when I had to gather as much information about how to choose a university in China as an international student, I followed two main principles to collect the information, which were authoritative and abundant.

Top Universities By Popular Rankings

As you want to know the top 10 universities in China for international students, many institutions with high reputations publish their rankings of universities in China. It’s highly important to check the influential rankings from several professional institutions, such as QS World University Rankings, the Academic Ranking of World Universities, and Times Higher Education World University Rankings. These three ranking institutions have their unique ways of analysis, so you can compare them before choosing a university.

Like the rankings in QS’s, you can only see the brief list of universities, including the names, the ranking in the world ranking, the rough location, and the overall rate.

But you can check for more details about the university after clicking on its name. The detail web page will show you the specific address of a university, its status, the situation of the research output, and the number of its total students, faculty and even international students. This page provides you with a more important overview of one university in China, which deserves your more attention.

Like the rankings in ARWU by Shanghai Jiaotong University, you can directly know more information on the homepage, like one university’s rank in its region or nation and the total score from the ones you can decide.

Besides, you can get to know more about your preferred university in China after clicking on the name. The detail web page will provide you with some graphs about the university’s performance, like in academic ranking of world rankings and academic ranking of world universities by subject fields. It has a program column that lists all the undergraduate and graduate programs the university offers, which can be constructive to determine the university that suits you.

More Rankings

The rankings by the institutions are far more enough, so you need to find more information. At this time, you can count on some third-party service website, like CUCAS an agency to help international students make applying for Chinese universities easier.

CUCAS has a China University Ranking Service that offers more specific and useful information which we international students need badly. This page divides Chinese universities into categories by region and program. Therefore, you can save much of your time and energy and quickly locate the universiies you might mostly interest in.

Moreover, CUCAS offer a platform, online exhibition 2021, in which you can interact in real-time with the teachers from the prestigious universities in China through live steaming. It’s very available to know one university during the COVID-19 period.

Besides these professional statistics and services, another way to know Chinese universities is through the experiences of the international students in China, how they feel about their studying abroad, including the environment, the facilities, and the quality of education.

Opinions from International Students

This kind of information source took a large proportion when I was deciding on the university in China. You can find some articles shared by many international students on the topic of life in China.

Besides, I happened to read some studies conducted by the researchers on why more international students consider studying in China. I bet you can learn many new perspectives about the benefits of studying in China as an international student, even in 2021 the time COVID-19 still hovers on and the cases increase from time to time.

The following paper summarizes the benefits of studying in China as an international student, which specially mentions Chinese language competence in job hunting for China’s political stability and economic boom. And there is also an article with convincible data to elaborate that China is both a source and hub for international students.

If you think the above article too difficult or feel impatient to read, there is an analysis article written by an international student Sushant Shrestha published on the website of Times Higher Education. He concluded five benefits or reasons he chose to study at a Chinese university. They are the affordable expense in China, the world-class education and research facilities of Chinese universities, cultural immersion and global exposure at the campus, increased university collaboration globally, and opportunities for interaction with students from all over the world.

My Ranking of Top Universities

Num. 1 Shanghai Jiao Tong University

It’s my dreaming school, but unfortunately, I failed it. Even so, I still recommend this university. Not to mention this university of long history and profound culture, it locates in the downtown district with convenient transportation that leads to wherever you want to. Besides, the campus can also provide you with a comfortable and colorful life through the perfect equipment. There is also an international student organization SIEC that organizes great activities related to Chinese culture and help you integrate into the Chinese university quickly. The international study life seems very charming here.

Num. 2 Beijing Foreign Studies University

I’m learning in BFSU as an international student currently. I have to admit that it’s a very inclusive language university that holds as many different cultures as it could. It definitely a university that mostly welcomes international students as I know. And BFSU locates in a great district in Beijing with a pleasant campus environment. Nearby are some famous attractions, like the Old Summer Palace and Summer Palace, astounding and appealing places worth visiting. I bet you will enjoy a variety of cultures here if you choose it.
