Tongji University being one of the leading universities in China is the best place to study basing on its vision; “A sustainability-oriented, world-class university”. This has been emphasizing on core-discipline enhancement, improvement of emerging disciplines, interdisciplinary integration and systematization of all the disciplines, thus promotes docking between subject and industrial chain optimizing the subject development pattern. I take this opportunity to express my interest in applying for International Masters program in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development at Tongji University, college of Environmental Science and Engineering. I recently graduated with a First class honours Bachelor degree in Environmental Studies and Community Development at Kenyatta University; Kenya. This was a four-year course, which helped equip me with broad knowledge on how humans interact with their environment. In particular, my program at Kenyatta University focused on all aspects of ecosystems and rural-urban development at a variety of different scales and from the perspectives of not only the natural and social sciences, but also the humanities. I believe this interdisciplinary approach will be a good background for the core courses in Tongji University School of Environmental Science and Engineering. I look forward to an admission in this University to balance out and build upon my undergraduate training with more in-depth opportunities in applied science, sustainable development, environmental management and policy, research and politics that are key to developing an environmental friendly society. In addition, this course is particularly intriguing as it introduces perspectives that will deepen my skills in the field and broaden my understanding of how to effectively demonstrate the relevance of resource management to the larger community. I chose a career in environment and development because I have always had a strong connection to nature and a deep desire to ensure sustainable use of resources to enhance economic security. I am not only fascinated by the subject but I desire to spend the rest of my life contributing to environmental management, protection and informing policies on the same and all of its aspects. My dedication to continue a paradigm of sustainability will not fade and is an enormous facet of my character therefore, Tongji University will help me achieve my desired goals and dreams of taking my masters in this particular field. During my undergraduate studies, I undertook a research thesis on the link between water pollution and community health in an informal settlement in Kenya. The study aroused my curiosity to study governance in environment and development that go a long way to protecting human rights. For my master thesis at Tongji University, I propose to study the interplay between green energy investments, local land claims and conflicts in Olkaria, Naivasha, Kenya.
