Growing up in a country prevalent with income inequality, high incidence of poverty, high level of corruption and non-inclusive growth have always made me desire to be a change agent. This stems from the experiences I have living in a country classified as a less developed or a developing country. I desire to be a significant part in uplifting the standard of living of a sizable percentage of my country's population. Presently about 70% of the nation’s population live below two dollars a day. Glancing at the headlines of any Nigerian newspaper reveals gory tales of economic problems, insurgencies and very recently the plummeting value of the Naira. The difference between Nigeria's level of development compared with some formerly less developed countries like China and India, that are presently classified as newly emerging economies has made me to ponder why Nigeria is lagging behind. This has aroused my interest in the choice of economics as a career. Economics is a subject that deals with human decisions and issues of life. The dynamism of subject matter of economics also makes it relevant across time and space and this also makes it a choice course for me at graduate level to expand my horizon on this noble subject and cash in on the opportunities it holds for the future. I am most interested in macroeconomics because it has to do with economic aggregates and because it has a direct impact on the economy. At my undergraduate level, I was exposed to various facets of life and my undergraduate program was a well-rounded experience particularly academically and in the areas of leadership. I was in an institution where the lecturers cared about the students and challenged them to achieve their potentials. They also helped build team work in us through series of group researches and other academic activities. Impacts made by Professors Awe and Ogunleye increased my interest in macroeconomics and econometrics. I especially enjoyed topics like the IS-LM model and consumption and investment theories. For my final year research project, I worked on “Power supply and the performance of small and medium scale industries in Nigeria” under the supervision of Professor Atoyebi. Using Logistic Regression Model and Multiple Regression Model, the result shows that power supply had a significant effect on how small and medium scale industries performed in my study area. I was a member of the Nigerian Economics Students Association in my University where I served as the Vice President Administration in my third year and President of the association in my fourth year. I was also the head of various tutorial groups and a member of the Liberation Army which is a non-governmental organization in my university that was geared towards giving hope to the hopeless and I served there under the orphanage support team. I studied French for a period of time after my university education and amiable to perform basic tasks in the language. Currently, i am serving my country under the National Youth Service Corps Scheme (NYSC) for all Nigerian graduates. I am also a member of the Red Cross which is under the NYSC banner. I currently work in the strategic planning department of the Bureau of Public Enterprises in Nigeria (BPE) where I have gained little experiences from the researches carried out on companies sold by the government especially electricity and telecommunication companies. I am of the opinion that this will give me the requisite training experience and further improve my research skills. I have chosen the Nankai University for my graduate degree because it has one of the best departments of economics in China with solid research base and extra-curricular activities geared at improving students' experience. This will definitely improve my knowledge in economic research and model building that will be of utmost importance to my country’s economy. After my master’s degree, I will like to pursue a doctorate degree in international economics after which I intend to come back to Nigeria to make a positive impact through the establishment of a non-governmental organization that will help in poverty reduction through effort geared towards improvement in the level of education as well as saving and investment behavior of the poor. This is with an intention to help the poor help themselves. Subsequently, because of my family’s political background and with the knowledge and experiences I gain, I intend to go into politics and represent my state as a senator. There, I shall push for sound economic policies that would ensure that Nigeria achieves her potential of becoming a leading world economy
