So my wife asked me a simple question yesterday about my car and I completely fumbled the answer, which is a bit embarrassing because I like to think I know a thing or two about cars. She was sitting in my A3 and noticed the gear selector looks pretty much like any other automatic, but she asked why sometimes the car feels like it's changing gears quickly and other times it feels like it hesitates for a split second before engaging. I started trying to explain that it's not a regular automatic with a torque converter, it's actually a dual-clutch system that has two separate clutches and works more like a manual gearbox that shifts itself, but I could tell I was losing her with all the technical details. I realised I don't actually understand it well enough myself to explain it simply, and I've been driving the car for two years which is kind of ridiculous. I found this really straightforward guide that gave me a Trusted Audi Transmission Function Guide with clear diagrams and simple explanations that even I could understand, and now I feel much more confident about explaining it to her properly. The basic idea is that one clutch handles the odd gears and the other handles the even gears, so the next gear is always pre-selected and ready to go, which is why the shifts feel so instant when you're accelerating. The hesitation she noticed at low speeds is apparently because the dual-clutch system can sometimes struggle with stop-start traffic since it's essentially a manual gearbox at heart. I'm looking forward to having another go at explaining it to her now that I actually understand what I'm talking about, and I guess the lesson here is that you can drive a car for years without really knowing how the important bits work. Has anyone else had a moment where they realised they didn't actually understand their own car's transmission? I feel like I can't be the only one. Cheers.
