Most of universities in China require applicants to provide one or two recommendation letters. The referee can be the student's current or former teacher, some may demand that the referee must be professor or associate professor or person with relevant academic title. For incumbents, the referee can be your employer. A letter of recommendation should be stamped with the official signature.
As for the content of the recommendation letter, it is supposed to include assessment of the applicant's study and research abilities, individual character, performance, team spirit, leadership qualities, potential for development and so on.
