It is said that 北外 is the cradle of the diplomats; with a reputation like this, it is no wonder the same university gave birth to one of the first UN translator programs. Not only is 北外in an amazing location, in the heart of Beijing, its outstanding performance and renown quality of teaching also makes it one of the best schools in China. In my experience, in order to be the best in something, one must learn from the best. Although I do not plan to work in China, my long-term goals reflect a passion to learn Chinese. I am confident that 北外 will satisfy that thirst, not only in terms of the academics, but in terms of its study body as well. The friendliness and worldly views of its student body are unmatched. People communicate across both cultural and language barriers. Even through a brief look at the Facebook page and the student blogs will demonstrate the vast array of languages that are spoken within the university’s walls. This is something that can not be easily imitated, and provides invaluable insight into other people and their cultures.

Even in my current Master’s program in Duke University, with a student body representing 9 countries(9/24), the reputation with 北外 amongst my classmates is overwhelming positive. They especially hold the national research center in high regards. After completing my masters in China, I hope to gain a competitive edge in the banking industry by being able to communicate to prospective clients in Chinese. In respect to my long-term goals, 北外 will help my life goal of being tri-lingual in English, Chinese and Spanish. The hardest part about learning a language is finding a language partner in America. Thus, by attending this university I can achieve my short term, as well as continue to make progress towards my long-term goal.
