I am applying to Chongqing University principally largely as a response to my recent visit to the city, when I became instantly fascinated with the history, culture, architecture and topography of the place. Additionally I have done much travelling in Sichuan province and have just finished a semester working as an English teacher in Mianyang in the north of the province. While Chongqing is it's own self-governing prefecture I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to study near to the province where I have spent much time in China and put down some roots, while also keen to explore a new area and local dialect.
I have lived and worked in China for a combined total of a year and a half, yet in that time I have only self-studied mandarin. My level is approximately that of HSK 4. Though, more specifically, my reading is higher and my speaking probably lower. At this point in my studies I am determined to experience formal tuition in a fully immersive Chinese learning environment that can offer me the chance to obtain a formal HSK or other qualifications. I believe that Chongqing University is the perfect place in this regard as the campus environment and facilities (which I saw during my visit) seem modern, yet full of natural scenery, and, as such, the perfect place to further my studies while making friends and immersing myself in Chinese student life.
To this end , I am further encouraged to apply to this university by the many positive things I have heard and read current and previous students say about their institution. Additionally, I am excited by the prospect of getting involved with activities organised by the International Students Office, and mixing with an extensive and diverse foreign student body from all over the world. The organised trip to the Dazu rock carving also sounds like an amazing opportunity.
While obviously not yet having any direct experience with lecturers, staff members or the course itself, I would finally like to say that am greatly encouraged by the very sophisticated, informative and well written English version of the University website.
Collectively I believe Chongqing is the perfect place for me to finally take my Chinese studies to the next level.
