Fudan University is one of the most respected universities in China and is located in Shanghai, the centre for finance and trade. When considering my decision of location to study there were many variables that I have taken into account, these are good language learning environment, opportunities for future growth and ability to network. Initially, it was my friend Drew McCartie (a current student at Fudan), who suggested that I look into studying at Fudan University. He had so many good things to say about the culture, teachers and other students which encouraged me to look into it further. Fudan University is one of the best in China, therefore attracting some of the most brilliant students nationwide as well as worldwide. One of the most exciting things about studying through Fudan University is the ability I will have to join student clubs, and integrate with a huge range of students studying everything from business to arts. With a long-term view of staying and working in China, it is important to recognise the doors that a university such as Fudan will open up, in terms of future employment opportunities. Being located in Shanghai gives me access to many businesses that I have previously worked with, such as Maijin and Fonterra, and therefore will allow me to continue to build relationships with these businesses during my studies. The programme itself is structured in a way that I believe works to my learning style. The ability to progress through the levels at the rate that I learn at offers me an incentive to apply myself more to the programme. 20 hours of structured class time a week allows me to spend adequate amounts of time in the ‘Reading Room’ for self-study. Fudan University is a hub for student activity and this also means that I will have added incentive to immerse myself completely in the culture and university. The year-long programme at Fudan University offers the ability to gain a strong grasp of the Chinese language as well as offering me an ecosystem of other students studying things like business, engineering and sciences. I believe that by growing my understanding of the Chinese language while also being surrounded by future business and tech leaders I would be providing myself with the tools to progress further in my career in China.
