Why SCUT?

To answer this question I should explain “Why China?”, first. During my stays in different countries, I was very much involved in volunteering projects in these countries, in lieu of being just a tourist. In the summer of 2014, I went to the United States under an exchange program called Work and Travel. With this program I stayed in the States over 4 months, developed my language along with mingling with locals and trying to understand what it’s like to live like an American. Over the course of 4 months, I worked as a volunteer in the Seacoast Vineyard Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the very place where I met my girlfriend, 郭燕怡. We are together for almost 3 years now and during our relationship I visited China several times, got to experience everyday life in China and formed lots of friendships.

I fall in love with China the very first time I have arrived at Guangzhou. I realized how blindfolded I was and wrong about Chinese people and Chinese culture. As soon as I had this epiphany, I knew that I had to live in China and contribute to it with my intellectual property, maybe working there as an engineer once I get the better of language barrier. Chinese is a very hard language. However, I like challenges. There’s nothing more noble in this life than work for one’s future.

This is where SCUT comes in. Being in Guangzhou, where my girlfriend and friends live in, giving foreign students the opportunity of completing their masters degrees in English medium programs, and being in a great place among other world universities are the reasons why I would love to enroll at South China University of Technology.

What Makes me a Stand Out Candidate ?

Everyone likes the idea of promoting themselves to the fullest, however, they do go overboard doing so. That is why I will be very sincere and genuine as I promote myself. There are many things I do good and there are things I do poor. What makes me a great candidate is that I like learning new things and improve myself each and every day. For starters, I put a premium on extracurricular activities. Unfortunately, students in my country think school is everything but they miss out on many other things at the end of the day. That’s why I try to avail myself of things that might make me a better and sought after person such as going to seminars, learning Chinese and different computer programming languages such as Matlab and Apple’s Swift, enrolling at courses on iTunes University and sparing time for my girlfriend.

Doing all these, I currently hold a 3.79 GPA as a senior electrical and electronics engineering student here in TEDU, enjoy quality time with my family, aware of latest news throughout the world, and designing a really beautiful senior project. I also obtained 99 points in TOEFL examination out of 120 and watch British and American TV shows and dramas several times a week so as to practice my current English level.

What is my Goal ?

During my study in China, I plan to immerse in Chinese culture and learn Mandarin to its fullest. Alongside these, I aim to form great and longstanding friendships with Chinese nationals to help me internalize living in China as a foreigner. My main goal is to finish my Master's in Electrical engineering or a related field with a great GPA. Later on, I want to pursue doctorate under the supervision of a well respected scholar.
