The world is becoming more intimately connected and inter-dependant as a consequence of globalisation and strong will for development, a solid grounding in the discipline of international relations is vital for anyone who wants to look behind the headlines and explore the key players in world politics or Studying Development Studies will enable me to build and acquire more knowledge on a course which I have loved since been first introduced in my third year at the university (Politics of Development and Underdevelopment). As an enthusiastic and highly motivated student I would love to experience and face the challenges which such a prestigious course would offer me. Studying Government and Public administration in my first degree reinforced my appreciation for topics related to Development and Underdevelopment especially in relations to community, states and inter-dependent nations coming together to agree on fundamental policies and laws which will help accelerate their level development, also the activities of multinational organisations in respect to the development of the communities or states in which they are operating. I love the term “Development” because it is phenomenon that cut across many nations ranging from the developed nations of Europe and North America down to the developing and underdeveloped nations of Asia, Africa and Latin America. I understand that this discipline is very vital for the understanding of the activities and events unfolding at each level, say international level or the Global village at large and how they affect the development of nations or states involved. What I intend to study is not just development but also how policies are formed and enacted to ascertain this development, the actors behind the formulation (states and individuals), the morals, the principles behind these policies and why they are successful or unsuccessful in some communities. At some point in my First degree I Studied sociology and it has enabled me to look at the sociological aspect of community development and also compare theories and political ideologies that centre on development. My attraction to media while growing up has enabled me to develop some analytical skills required to fully understand complex texts and has provided me with the knowledge on the influence of media in community development and world politics which cut across different nations of the world and the important roles that states and individuals are playing in the media sector to positively affect development as it relates to them.. My passion for this course extends beyond an academic aspect and vision; I have a passion for the field. I enjoy reading books such as “The politics of Developing Nations” and “The Politics of Development and Underdevelopment”, this will enable me to have a broad knowledge of Development Studies and what policies, events or activities can bring about development at a sustainable level in modern societies. I also was opportune to do a research work on “The effects of globalization in Africa with Nigeria as a case study”, I ones attended a public debate held at state house of assembly in Nigeria, these has played a role in expanding my knowledge on topics ranging from political ideologies, international policies and activities of multinational corporations, all of which I have found extremely useful as they all are geared towards development. During my study as an undergraduate, I was involved as a group leader in different seminars with topics ranging from “multinational corporations to international organizations and also globalization to first world nations and third world nations inter dependence, with successful results. Last year I attended a seminar organised by Dr Prince .S. Ezeanyika who travelled to South Africa where he took time to have an insight on the culture and tradition of the indigenous people, this seminar deepened my political and cultural knowledge. He laid a lot of emphasis on the importance of family structure, education and policy making in societal development. Having visited various countries and learning about their policies and how they are made and to what extent it benefits their society his seminar further inspired me to pursue a career in international relations, development studies and community development. It is a passion of mine to learn new development strategies, international approaches and also analysis which will give me the proper foundations and create a better platform to broaden my knowledge on Development. The aforementioned reasons drive my will to study Development Studies. I believe it will give me the confidence that will make me better and able to deal with the high demands of this course. Outside academics, I also have great passion for soccer and I was a member of my university soccer team and have represented my department many times in different soccer competition ranging from Vice Chancellors Cup to Registrar’s Cup to Dean of Faculty cup with positive results. I aspire to represent my country Nigeria in international activities geared towards National development and take part in shaping its development related policies. On the risk of sounding presumptuous, I hope to be able to make a difference in the world some day. Studying in China and in your very popular university amongst others will surely put me on the right track towards achieving my dreams. As a Nigerian citizen, I hope that I can contribute to the diverse and stimulating student body.
