Ever since I was young, I have realised the importance of getting a good education, as it meant that you could understand the world around you better. Being born in Hong Kong and having a multicultural background, has meant that I have been privileged to see the best and the worst parts of the world. This has also led me to believe that in order to receive a good education, one must be in a program where you can experience excellent tuition while being in an social, cultural and economic powerhouse such as Shanghai. I believe that being in China, studying your institution’s program will give me an in-depth understanding of how to navigate the world of international economics and trade. Also I believe that learning Mandarin is vitally important in dealing in business today. With an international trade degree from the University of Shanghai, I hope I can change the lives of some of the most down-trodden people in the world, while also making my family, friends and community proud.

At school, in 2014 I was the international boarding prefect. I found this role really rewarding as I helped new students settle in a new environment. And in 2015, I was a member of the Student Council and tutor group leader. Being tutor group leader led to some of my best memories, such as helping younger students, organizing activities to bring the group closer and making better friends with everyone. Through all of these leadership roles, I found myself to be in a position where I could help others.

Throughout my time at high school, I have been very involved in music and performing arts. Being part of the Black Watch Singers from 2013 to 2014 taught me a lot about music theory, working in a team and learning from mistakes. Being part of this group also led to us being commended at the Big Sing regionals in 2014. Also I have been an actor and director in my school’s annual Shakespeare Soiree, a cast member of our Stage Challenge group, a national dance and music competition. One of my favourite activities was being part of the Thai Dance group because I got to learn so much about the culture and be part of the ASB Polyfest.

As for my non-musical extra-curricular activities, I have been fortunate enough to be part of so many different initiatives. Being part of the Philosophy Club was one of my favourite activities as it was the only place where one could discuss world issues and how perspectives affect them. This then led to being part of an inter-school philosophy conference. Also I have completed my Duke of Edinburgh silver award.

For charity work, I was a school representative for Amnesty International and helped with fundraising. As well as that, I have been a monthly charity volunteer at the Whitford Bird Rescue and Habitat for Humanity. In 2015, I volunteered at Eat My Lunch, which makes food for low-income kids in the North Island. Since 2012, I have been part of Hockey and Netball teams, as well as being in Senior Tramping. Outside of school, I volunteered extensively in 2014 and 2015 for a Hong Kong based charity called Crossroads, which distributes goods and supplies to international communities in need.

I strive to succeed academically in this course, but also to attain a new cultural perspective and improve my Mandarin. I sincerely hope that my ventures aid in your decision to attend your institution. I believe that the best way to change the world is through international co-operation and trade.
