Born and bred in a third world country-Ghana, I have witnessed and experienced several socio-economic development challenges and public crises such as poor environmental sanitation which leads to outbreak of health related diseases like malaria, cholera, and typhoid, among others. This has really inspired me to appreciate the essence of putting up measures to eradicate such challenges. In fact, my ultimate dream in life is to become a “well-equipped” Environmentalist and/or a Waste Management Expert who can help to implement appropriate public policies and projects to improve and protect the quality of the natural environment in my country. Based on my career aspirations and goals, I seek for an opportunity to pursue a full scholarship study for Masters in Environmental Science and Engineering at your noble institution for the September 2018 intake. The capital city of Ghana known as Accra has a serious waste management problem. Due to the rapid population growth, urbanization and other developmental activities, the city is faced with issues of indiscriminate disposal of wastes resulting in environmental pollution. I will like to assist the government of Ghana in providing a sustainable solution to this problem. As a research topic for my master’s level education, I am interested in examining urban waste management and planning in Ghana. This will broaden my scope of knowledge on the modern day strategies of sustainable urban waste management to help improve my country’s urban waste situation. I am amply optimistic of excelling in this program when given the full scholarship because of my outstanding academic records in my undergraduate program. In fact, I graduated with Second Class Honors in Bachelor of Arts (Integrated Development Studies) at the University for Development Studies which is one of the respected public universities in Ghana. I am among the top 5 best students who graduated in my department. The knowledge, skills and experience gathered from my undergraduate program has already strengthened my academic capabilities. On this basis, I can sufficiently excel in the most difficult and complex courses in either of the program. My previous studies were entirely conducted in English language. As a result I will not face any challenge in comprehending the specific courses and topics in this program. My preference for this program from your institution is based on the fact that, it is a very organized development-oriented postgraduate program that can help me to achieve my ultimate goal of becoming an Environmentalist or waste management expert. Moreover, it will equip me with the skills needed to research into environmental challenges so as to help provide sustainable solutions to some of these challenges. More to the point, I strongly trust that this post graduate program can adequately equip me with the analytical, methodological and practical expertise required to efficiently implement appropriate public policies and projects to ensure environmental sustainability in my country. I really believe this program will deeply enlighten me about modern day strategies and the entire waste management processes. This will eventually improve my understanding of how best to improve the environmental conditions of the people in my country (Ghana). The bilingual character of your institution is also one of the features that spurred my interest in the university. I have always wanted the opportunity to learn a second language. Living in China will give me the opportunity to learn the Chinese language which is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Learning Chinese language will help me interact at the global level not only in English but also in Chinese which gives me a greater advantage to be a competent and unique researcher. Moreover, the student body in your institution is largely multi- national, and I am deeply looking forward to the prospect of meeting people from around the world to share ideas through different cultural perspectives. During my undergraduate program, I exhibited a good leadership and communications skills. I was the interns’ coordinator to an international organization known as AIESEC. My influence have helped to impact positively on the lives of the under-privileged children in some rural communities in Ghana by making donations in the form of food, clothing, among other relieved items just to put a smile on their depressing faces. With a long term goal in mind, my immediate objective is to work with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of my country after successfully completing my masters program so as to contribute my knowledge to the development and sustainable use of the natural environment . I will be grateful if I am offered a full scholarship to pursue Masters Program in Environmental Science and Engineering for the September 2018 intake based on my satisfactory academic records, practical experience and career aspirations. If given the approval, I can assure you that I will continue to be a devoted and diligent student. I look forward to becoming a graduate student in your reputable institution. Yours Sincerely, Courage Selorm Kwasi Alato
